The Northwest Old Boys (aka NOBs) were established 1997. Previously known as Seattle Old Guard, an extension of the Seattle Rugby Club, the team was broadened to include players from all rugby clubs in the Puget Sound area. Founding organizer Michael Murphy was instrumental in opening up the membership eligibility, creating the bylaws and determining our precedents.
Our seasonal opponents are primarily in British Columbia, where established rugby clubs each have their own Old Boys side. The overseeing jurisdiction is the Cascadia Masters Rugby Union (CMRU), collecting dues, managing schedules and refining rules of eligibility and play. We also compete with Old Boys teams in the Portland area, travel to Maggotfest in the Spring, and compete in various other tournaments and events.
Officially, CMRU is for players 40 years of age and older, but to encourage development, playhas been open to players as young as 38, with discretion.
The original jersey color was all black, but in recent years we have introduced silver and blue. Players can wear socks of their choice to indicate original club side, or the team socks. Our touring jerseys and shorts are predominantly silver.
Shorts color is determined by convention and Union rules, to indicated age group: 40-49 White; 50-59 Black; 60-69 Red; 70-79 Yellow; and 80 to beyond Purple. Women also compete, and may don red shorts at age 50.
Our logo is the double-bladed battle ax of Knossos, Crete. The Orca symbol represents Salish Sea region with respect to indigenous inhabitants. NOBs are a fully inclusive organization, dedicated to enjoyment of the competitive sport and extraordinary social life of Rugby Union Football.
